Do you feel out of breath on some random day? What you might be considering a lung problem could be a PMS symptom! Wondering about the connection between both? Read on and find out. - By Nikita Arya
Premenstrual syndrome or PMS is a way of life for many women. And this way of life is different for different women. One of you might crave chocolates while some of you cry your eyes out for no reason. And then some breathe hastily when periods are near. Does the latter sound familiar to you?
As crazy as they may sound, PMS symptoms are real and so varied that you won’t even realize that it’s a symptom. Heavy breathing and wheezing are some of the PMS symptoms that many of us experience but we never knew that they were!
Unfortunately, mood swings, irritability, abdominal pain, and crying for no reason are not the only PMS symptoms one could have. Researchers found that heavy breath and wheezing could contribute to PMS symptoms.
The two female hormones, estrogen and progesterone, love to play tango inside our bodies as they tend to fluctuate at times throughout the menstrual cycle. Production of progesterone largely varies during two essential phases of your menstrual cycle, i.e., follicular and luteal, which tend to affect breathing.
During the luteal phase (days 15-28) in the menstruation cycle, the body produces high progesterone, leading to increased breathing. When you breathe excessively, the level of carbon dioxide in your blood declines, which may worsen the process of oxygenation. By the time your body crosses ovulation, the carbon dioxide levels count the lowest. This reduction of carbon dioxide may be considered a PMS symptom.
Generally, during day 1-14, the carbon dioxide levels are at their highest due to the low progesterone (suggesting normal breathing), while day 22-28, which are just days before your periods, remains the worst ( hence, stressed breathing). That is why you may experience heavy breathing when periods are around the corner.
Heavy breathing and wheezing could make your period even worse. PMS symptoms are so normalized forever that most of us don’t even look up for natural relief.
